Monotypes

A monotype is essentially ONE-OF-A-KIND: mono is latin for One and type means kind.
Therefore, a monotype is one printed image which does not have any form of matrix.
Often times made by printing off a sheet of plexiglas.

A monoprint has some form of matrix.  Monotypes can be thought of as variations on a theme, with the theme resulting from some permanent features being found on the plate-lines, textures-that persist from one print to the next.  Variations are confined to those resulting from how the plate is inks prior to each print.  The variations are endless but certain features on the plate will tend to persist from print to print.
